Based on the poem by Robert W. Service
Set against the unforgiving sub-zero bite of a Yukon winter, this contemporary reimagining transforms Robert W. Service’s classic ballad into an atmospheric, darkly comic exploration of isolation, masculine vulnerability, and northern folklore. On Christmas Day in the Canadian north, three oil and bush workers—The Foreman, The Runt, and The Family Man—huddle into a truck cab cutting through minus-40 weather, bound for Dawson City. Along the icy route, a CBC broadcast of Service’s iconic verse crackles over the dashboard radio, interweaving with the men’s unraveling home lives, anxieties, and unvarnished truths.
When they pick up an enigmatic hitchhiker wandering out of the whiteout, a routine haul quickly slips from harsh reality into eerie Northern surrealism. Fueled by Canadian whisky, bone-chilling winds, and a fateful bonfire, the journey moves toward The Pit—Dawson City’s mythic dive bar—where past debts, hidden desires, and unspoken promises surface before the final spark is struck. Brought to life by composer Matthew Ricketts and Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist Royce Vavrek, The Cremation of Sam McGee delivers an evocative, gritty, and hypnotic Canadian chamber opera where a promise made remains a debt unpaid.
